The Russian Railway Museum is launching a new themed tour, “From the ‘Cuckoo’ to the ‘Swallow’: The History of Suburban Rail Service in Russia.” The route explores the emergence of suburban transport in Russia, the evolution of suburban rolling stock, and its influence on the everyday lives of city residents.

Participants will receive a detailed look at the technical features of suburban carriages from different eras and visit exhibits, some of which are normally closed to general access. During the tour, the group will enter pre-revolutionary second- and third-class carriages, the leading carriage of an electric multiple unit (one of the first Soviet electric trains), and a 1940 suburban carriage built by the Leningrad Yegorov Plant.

Participants will discuss questions rarely addressed on general tours: what classes made up a suburban train and which passengers could be encountered on the journey; why coach-style carriages did not become widespread in Russia and which design feature of Soviet carriages foreshadowed wartime conditions; the origin of the term “vagonka” and who was colloquially called a “dacha husband”; and what opportunities and limitations passengers of the past had compared with those of today.

Recommended for visitors aged 12 and over who are already familiar with the main stages of railway history. Tour duration: 1.5 hours. Group size: up to 10 people. Advance registration by phone: +7 (812) 457-23-16.

8,500 rubles per group plus museum admission tickets for each participant (500 rubles on weekdays, 600 rubles on weekends; discounts available).
