As of July 11, 2026, the cab of the TE-6769 trophy steam locomotive is open for viewing at the Russian Railway Museum.
In the cab, instruments and other missing details have been installed, the locomotive tools have been arranged, and lighting has been added. Visitors can look through the cab window from a special staircase.
This locomotive was built at the Floridsdorf plant in Austria in 1943. TE was the Soviet designation for German Class 52 steam locomotives; it means “Trophy, with characteristics close to Class E locomotives.” They were developed in Germany during World War II on the basis of the German railways’ Class 50 locomotive, whose design was simplified as much as possible. These locomotives came to the USSR as war trophies and through reparations deliveries under German Class 52 designation. In the early 1950s, the Class 52 locomotives were assigned the domestic TE class. Later, modernization carried out in the USSR improved their characteristics.
“We have restored the cab of the TE-6769 locomotive, ‘Frau,’ as Soviet railway workers nicknamed these engines. Looking inside, visitors will see what the workplace of a locomotive crew looked like more than half a century ago. The museum’s restorers paid special attention to details that help visitors immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the difficult work of steam-locomotive crews. We are confident that this event will interest enthusiasts of historic technology and delight all our guests,” said Dmitry Golovkin, Director of the Russian Railway Museum.
