Diesel locomotives
TE7-013
<space=1em><b>Powerful diesel locomotives</b>
<space=1em>In the mid-1950s, a large-scale process of replacing steam locomotives with "progressive types of traction" — diesel and electric — began on the USSR railway transport. For train operation on sections and entire lines of railways being converted to diesel traction, a large number of new powerful diesel locomotives were required that could successfully replace steam locomotives.
<space=1em>In connection with this, serial production of freight diesel locomotives of the TE3 series was organized in a short time, which since 1955 began to be manufactured in large quantities at three plants at once. On many railways, these machines began to be used quite successfully not only in freight, but also in passenger traffic. However, the TE3 diesel locomotives were not suitable for working with passenger trains on the most important railway lines, mainly due to their speed characteristics.
<space=1em><b>Updated project</b>
<space=1em>The simplest solution to this situation was to produce passenger locomotives, which were TE3 diesel locomotives adapted for this type of traffic with appropriate changes in the design. Such locomotives were created at the Kharkov Plant of Transport Engineering (KhZTM) and received the designation <nobr>TE7 series</nobr>.
<space=1em>The TE7 series diesel locomotive</nobr> was a two-section locomotive, all of whose main equipment was similar to that installed <nobr>on the TE3</nobr>: a ten-cylinder two-stroke <nobr>2D100 diesel</nobr> with a capacity of <nobr>2,000 hp. with counter-moving pistons, traction generator <nobr>МПТ-99/47</nobr>, traction motors <nobr>ЭДТ-200</nobr> with support-axial suspension.
<space=1em>The main difference was in the design of the traction gearbox: due to a decrease in its gear ratio (<nobr>66 : 26 = 2.54</nobr> instead of <nobr>75 : 17 = 4.41</nobr> on the TE3), the design speed of the TE7 increased to <nobr>140 km/h</nobr> (<nobr>for the TE3 - 100 km/h</nobr>) while simultaneously reducing the traction force in long-term mode to <nobr>23,200 kgf</nobr> (<nobr>for the TE3 - 40,400 kgf</nobr>). In addition, the TE7 had a new control cabin design with increased windshield height, which was later introduced on the TE3.
<space=1em><b>Serial production</b>
<space=1em>Passenger locomotives of the <nobr>TE7 series</nobr> were produced at the Kharkov plant from 1956 to <nobr>1962</nobr>, <nobr>№ 001–028</nobr>, and at the Lugansk (Voroshilovgrad) plant from 1963 to <nobr>1964</nobr>, <nobr>№ 029–113</nobr>. In total, the two plants built <nobr>113 locomotives</nobr> of this series.
<space=1em><b>Operation</b>
<space=1em>The very first TE7s arrived at the October Railway, where since <nobr>1956</nobr> they began to service express trains on the <nobr>Leningrad - Moscow</nobr> line, replacing the P36 steam locomotives. Since <nobr>1960</nobr> they pulled daytime express trains, covering the distance between Leningrad and Moscow in <nobr>650 km</nobr> in <nobr>6 hours</nobr> <nobr>20 minutes</nobr>. On the main line of the October Railway (Leningrad-Passazhirsky-Moskovsky depot), the TE7s operated until its through electrification in <nobr>1962</nobr>
<space=1em>In addition to the October Railway, the <nobr>TE7</nobr> series diesel locomotives were also used on the Moscow (Smolensk, Bryansk, Uzlovaya, Tula depots), Severnaya (Vologda, Kuloy, Ivanovo depots), Yugo-Zapadnaya (Kyiv, Zhmerinka, Korosten depots) and Lvovskaya (Lvov-Zapad depots). Most of the locomotives of this series were retired and excluded from the inventory in the <nobr>1980s.</nobr> The last TE7 locomotives in Russia to be in operation were the Ivanovo depot of the Northern Railway, where these machines operated passenger trains until <nobr>1997–1998.</nobr>
<space=1em><b>Museum exhibit</b>
<space=1em>The <nobr>TE7 013</nobr> locomotive presented in the museum, manufactured in <nobr>1960</nobr> by the Kharkov plant, was delivered from construction to the Leningrad-Passazhirsky-Moskovsky depot of the October Railway, in <nobr>1963</nobr> it was transferred to the South-West, and in <nobr>1968 —</nobr> to the Northern. The diesel locomotive arrived at the museum from the Ivanovo depot of the Northern Railway in <nobr>1997</nobr>

But TE3 diesel locomotives were not suitable for work with passenger trains on the most important railway lines, mainly due to their speed and dynamic characteristics. Therefore, it was decided to produce passenger diesel locomotives, that is, to make changes to the TE3 design in order to adapt them to this type of movement. Such locomotives were created at the Kharkov Plant of Transport Engineering (KhZTM) and the series was designated as TE7. <space=1em>Passenger diesel locomotives of the TE7 series were produced at the Kharkov Plant in 1956-1962 (No. 001-028) and at the Lugansk (Voroshilovgrad) Plant in 1963-1964 (No. 029-113). There, these machines hauled passenger trains until 1997–1998. <space=1em>The TE7-013 diesel locomotive on display in the museum was manufactured in 1960 by the Kharkov plant. After construction, it was sent to the Leningrad-Passazhirsky-Moskovsky depot of the October Railway. In 1963, it was transferred to the Southwestern Railway, and in 1968, to the Northern Railway. It arrived at the museum from the Ivanovo depot of this railway in 1997.
