Electric locomotives

ChS2-023

<space=1em><b>Soviet order</b>

<space=1em>The ChS1 series electric locomotives supplied from Czechoslovakia were successfully used on the USSR railways. However, soon, in the conditions of constantly increasing volumes of passenger transportation, the need for more powerful passenger locomotives became increasingly apparent. This became the reason for placing a Soviet order at the Skoda plant for the production of a six-axle DC passenger electric locomotive.

<space=1em><b>Experimental models</b>
<space=1em>In <nobr>1958</nobr> the Skoda plant built and delivered to the USSR two experimental models of such a locomotive of the factory <nobr>type 25E0</nobr>. During testing on the Moscow-Kursk-Donbass Railway, a number of shortcomings were revealed in their design. In <nobr>1961</nobr> the plant designed a new six-axle electric locomotive <nobr>type 34E</nobr> for the railways of the Soviet Union, which became a further development of <nobr>type 25E0</nobr>, the design of which was significantly redesigned.

<space=1em><b>Serial production</b>

<space=1em>Since <nobr>1962</nobr> the Skoda plant began serial production of such machines, which in the USSR received the designation of the ChS2 series (Czechoslovak, second type). Ultimately, serial production of the ChS2 electric locomotives continued for ten years, <nobr>1962–1972.</nobr> At the same time, various changes and improvements were constantly made to the design of the locomotives, which was reflected in the change of factory model designations from 34E0 to 34E4 in <nobr>1962–1964.</nobr> and from 53E0 to 53E9 in <nobr>1964–1972.</nobr>

<space=1em><b>Design</b>
<space=1em>The ChS2 series electric locomotives use a support-frame suspension of traction electric motors, made according to a scheme similar to that implemented on the ChS1 and ChS3. The torque from the engine to the axle gear was transmitted via elastic crosspieces and a shaft (Sescheron drive system). The <nobr>electric locomotive control system is</nobr> rheostat-contactor, with three possible engine connections: serial, serial-parallel and parallel.

<space=1em>Two motor-compressors and two motor-fans were installed in the body. Some electric locomotives (ЧС2Т factory <nobr>type 53E</nobr>) were equipped with equipment for rheostatic braking. Also in the series were released two experimental electric locomotives ChS2M (<nobr>No. 565</nobr> and 566 of the factory <nobr>type 53E3) with a design speed of <nobr>180 km/h.</nobr>

<space=1em>In total, in <nobr>1962–1972</nobr> the Skoda plant built and delivered to the USSR <nobr>942 electric locomotives</nobr> of the <nobr>ChS2</nobr> series, <nobr>No. 003–944</nobr>. These locomotives worked on many railways and in the <nobr>1970s–1990s</nobr> were the most common passenger electric locomotives on the USSR road network.

<space=1em><b>Operation</b>

<space=1em>They were operated on the October Railway (Leningrad-Passazhirsky-Moskovsky, Moscow-Oktyabrskaya, Murmansk depots), Moscow (Moscow-Passazhirskaya-Kurskaya, Moscow-Sortirovochnaya, Moscow-Kievskaya, <nobr>Moscow-3</nobr>, <nobr>Ilyicha</nobr>, Lobnya, Orel), South (Oktyabr depot), Kuibyshev (Kuibyshev depot), Sverdlovsk (Sverdlovsk-Passazhirsky depot), West Siberian (Barabinsk depot), South Ural (Petropavlovsk depot), Donetsk (Slavyansk, Yasinovataya depot) and Pridneprovskaya (Dnepropetrovsk, Melitopol, Simferopol, Nikopol, Krivoy Rog).

<space=1em>The operation of these locomotives on the <nobr>JSC Russian Railways</nobr> network ended in the <nobr>21st century.</nobr> However, on the Ukrainian railways, these electric locomotives, which have undergone major repairs and modernization, continue to be used to this day.

<space=1em>On the main line <nobr>Leningrad - Moscow</nobr> of the October Railway, these locomotives were previously used with high-speed passenger trains with speeds of up to <nobr>160 km/h</nobr>. In <nobr>1963</nobr> individual trains between Leningrad and Moscow were on the road for <nobr>5 hours</nobr> <nobr>27 minutes</nobr>. During test runs in <nobr>1965</nobr>, the ChS2 series electric locomotives traveled this route in <nobr>4 hours</nobr> <nobr>59 minutes</nobr>.

<space=1em><b>Museum exhibit</b>

<space=1em>The <nobr>ChS2 023</nobr> electric locomotive presented in the museum, built in <nobr>1962</nobr> (factory <nobr>type 34E1</nobr>, factory <nobr>number 4377</nobr>), was sent from the factory to the Dnieper Railway, and in <nobr>1977</nobr> it was transferred to the West Siberian Railway. The electric locomotive arrived at the museum from the Barabinsk depot of the West Siberian Railway in <nobr>2001</nobr>

Хронология:  <space=1em>The series of six-axle direct current locomotives of the ChS2 type (Chekholovatsky, type 2) is the largest series of locomotives that the Škoda plant built for the USSR. The prerequisite for their order was the development of railway electrification. <space=1em>The first two prototypes of such an electric locomotive with the factory designation 25E0 (type ChS2 for the USSR) were built in 1958. These two prototypes had the same electric motors as the ChS1 type with a capacity of 586 kW. That is, the increase in power was achieved by increasing the number of electric motors. The power of the electric locomotive in hourly and continuous modes increased to 3,690 and 3,712 kW, respectively. <space=1em>In December 1958, both prototypes were delivered for testing to the Moscow-Passazhirskaya-Kurskaya (Moscow-1) depot on the Moscow - Skuratovo section. The ChS2-002 locomotive was tested on the Serpukhov-Orel and Klin-Kalinin (Tver) sections, where it pulled a train of 19 all-metal cars with a total weight of 1,060 tons. On sections with a climb of 9 ‰, the speed reached 110 km/h, the highest - 140 km/h. <space=1em>The next two prototypes ChS2-003 and 004 (factory type 34E0) were built in 1961. They were significantly modified, and externally they were very different. In August 1962, they arrived at the Moscow-Kurskaya depot, and later they were transferred to the October Railway. There they were tested on the Leningrad - Malaya Vishera section and traveled at speeds of up to 160 km/h. <space=1em>In 1962–1963, the first series (factory type 34E2) of 100 machines was built, which also underwent design changes: the most important was the replacement of the Czechoslovak DAKO braking system with a Soviet system. <space=1em>ChS2 locomotives No. 005–023 and No. 100–104 were transferred for operation to the Moscow-Kurskaya depot. The remaining locomotives of this series were sent to the Kharkov depot and the October Railway. As an experiment, two electric locomotives (factory type 53E3) No. 565 and No. 566, manufactured at the end of 1965, received a gear ratio from the electric motors to the wheel pairs for travel at high speeds. This made it possible to increase the maximum speed from 160 to 180 km/h. They were designated ChS2M and in March 1966 they were sent to the October Railway for testing, where they reached a speed of 205 km/h, and in 1973 — 220 km/h. <space=1em>In total, the Skoda plant produced 944 ChS2 passenger electric locomotives for the USSR by 1973, including prototypes 001 and 002. Modernization work continued throughout the entire production period. These squat locomotives with current collectors like those on a coffee table determined the appearance of the passenger train for many years. <space=1em>The ChS2-023 electric locomotive (factory number 4378) presented in the museum was built in 1962. From the factory it was sent to the Moscow-Kurskaya depot, then it was transferred to the Dnieper Railway, and in 1977 it was transferred to the West Siberian Railway. It was sent to the museum from the Barabinsk depot of this railway in 2001.
