Diesel locomotives
TEP60-0190
<space=1em><b>New locomotive</b>
<space=1em>In the <nobr>1950s</nobr> the USSR railways received large quantities of TE7 and TEP10 series diesel locomotives for passenger service. These locomotives were successfully used on the network, but they were actually freight diesel locomotives adapted for passenger train service.
<space=1em>Considering this circumstance, at the end of the <nobr>1950s</nobr> the Kolomna Diesel Locomotive Plant began developing a new diesel locomotive, which was originally designed for passenger service and would fully meet the conditions of such work. The new locomotive was designated the TEP60 series.
<space=1em><b>Improvements</b>
<space=1em>TEP60 was a single-section six-axle passenger diesel locomotive with a design speed of <nobr>160 km/h</nobr>. It was equipped with a sixteen-cylinder two-stroke diesel 11D45 with a power of <nobr>3,000 hp</nobr>, a direct current traction generator <nobr>MPT-120/55A</nobr> (later <nobr>GP-311V</nobr>), traction electric motors <nobr>ED-105A</nobr> (later <nobr>ED-108</nobr>). Electric power transmission, direct current.
<space=1em>The main design features of the new locomotive were a monocoque body, a support-frame suspension of traction motors (more suitable for use on high-speed locomotives) and a hydrostatic drive for the cooling device fans (implemented on domestic diesel locomotives for the first time).
<space=1em>Later, during serial production, various changes and improvements were gradually made to the locomotive design (in particular, machines produced before <nobr>1966</nobr> were equipped with roof sections of the cooling device, which were later abandoned).
<space=1em><b>Serial production</b>
<space=1em>The TEP60 series diesel locomotives turned out to be quite successful machines and were produced at the Kolomna plant for <nobr>25 years</nobr>. In total, <nobr>1,241 locomotives</nobr> of this series were built between <nobr>1960 and 1985</nobr> (<nobr>No. 0001–1241</nobr>). In addition, between 1964 and <nobr>1987</nobr>, the two-section modification 2TEP60 was produced in small batches, <nobr>116 units in total</nobr>, <nobr>No. 0001–0116</nobr>.
<space=1em><b>Operation</b>
<space=1em>TEP60 series locomotives operated on many railways and were the most common passenger diesel locomotives on the USSR Ministry of Railways network from the second half of the 1960s to the mid-1980s.
<space=1em>The very first TEP60 diesel locomotives were delivered mainly to the October Railway to the Leningrad-Baltic depot (in <nobr>1970</nobr> they were transferred to the Leningrad-Varshavsky depot) and the Leningrad-Passazhirsky-Moskovsky depot. In subsequent years, the October Railway received significant batches of TEP60 diesel locomotives, which gradually became the main series of passenger diesel locomotives on the road. These machines were mainly operated by the Leningrad-Varshavsky, Velikiye Luki, Bologoye, Volkhovstroy and Kem depots.
<space=1em>In addition to Oktyabrskaya, the TEP60 series diesel locomotives were used on almost all railways in the European part of the USSR: the Baltic (Zasulauks depot), Belarusian (Minsk, Orsha, Vitebsk, Brest depots), Moscow (Smolensk depot), Southern, Dnieper (Melitopol, Pologi, Pyatikhatki, Krivoy Rog, Kerch, Dnepropetrovsk depots), South-Eastern (Yelets, Gryazi depots), Volga (Saratov, Volgograd depots), North Caucasian (Salsk depot), Sverdlovsk (Tyumen depot) and West Siberian (Barnaul depot).
<space=1em><b>Retired</b>
<space=1em>Most of the locomotives of this series were retired and excluded from the inventory in the late 1980s and in the <nobr>1990s.</nobr> The last one in Russia to operate TEP60 diesel locomotives was the Salsk depot of the North Caucasian Railway, where these machines worked with passenger trains until <nobr>2009.</nobr>
<space=1em><b>Museum exhibit</b>
<space=1em>The <nobr>TEP60 0190</nobr> diesel locomotive presented in the museum, manufactured in <nobr>1967</nobr>, factory <nobr>number 1083</nobr>, arrived from construction at the October Railway, where it operated for more than two decades. The locomotive arrived at the museum from the Leningrad-Varshavsky depot in <nobr>1990</nobr>

Хронология:
<space=1em>In February 1956, at the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, a decision was made to stop building steam locomotives and switch to diesel and electric locomotive traction. After that, mass production of diesel locomotives began. <space=1em>Diesel engineering gradually developed, and engines with a capacity of 3,000–4,500 hp began to appear. Thanks to this, the speeds and weights of the locomotives being built for hauling trains increased. <space=1em>Initially, a batch of TE7 diesel locomotives based on the TE3 diesel locomotive was produced, as well as TEP-10 based on the TE-10 diesel locomotive. Therefore, in the same 1956, the Ministry of Railways issued the V. V. Kuibyshev Kolomna Diesel Locomotive Plant an assignment to design passenger diesel locomotives. Subsequently, the plant began to produce only passenger diesel locomotives. The assignment required designing a single- or dual-section locomotive on two three-axle bogies, with a coupling weight of 126 tons, an engine power of 3,000 hp and a design speed of 140 km/h. <space=1em>In April 1960, the first passenger diesel locomotive, designated TEP60-0001, left the plant's workshops. In the spring of 1961, it was sent for testing on the Moscow-Leningrad line of the October Railway. That same year, their serial production began. <space=1em>At the test ring of VNIIZhT (All-Union Research Institute of Railway Transport) in Shcherbinka, comparative tests were conducted between the TEP60-0001 diesel locomotive and the TE11-002 diesel locomotive - this series was initially designated TEP10. Then the advantage of the TEP60 diesel locomotive at high speeds was revealed, after which it was recommended for servicing passenger and especially express trains. In practice, the "Sixties" pulled all types of trains, including suburban ones. <space=1em>A total of 1,240 diesel locomotives were built from 1960 to 1987 - this is the most widespread series of passenger diesel locomotives to date. <space=1em>The Kolomensky Plant constantly worked to improve the quality of the TEP-60 diesel locomotives, and this yielded results. During the recertification of diesel locomotives of this series in 1975 and 1979, the State Certification Commission twice awarded them the Quality Mark. It should be noted that all diesel locomotives of the Kolomensky Plant have a characteristic design. <space=1em>The use of a two-stroke engine in the locomotive, the old age of the design and the decline in passenger transportation led to their rapid decommissioning. By the 2000s, this process was almost complete. <space=1em>The anniversary diesel locomotive TEP60-1000 is installed on a monument in the St. Petersburg-Passazhirsky-Moskovsky depot. <space=1em>The TEP60-0190 diesel locomotive presented in the museum was manufactured in 1967 (factory number - 1083). It was delivered from the factory to the October Railway, where it was used for more than twenty years. It was delivered to the museum from the Leningrad-Varshavsky depot in 1990.
