Chief officer, 1855
<space=1em>First samples
<space=1em>The first samples of railway uniforms appeared in 1809, when the Institute of the Corps of Railway Engineers was created. This educational institution was supposed to train personnel for the railways. Cadets and graduates of the Institute wore military-style uniforms. The ranks and titles of employees were distinguished by silver epaulettes and gilded stars. Students wore an officer's uniform, but there were no epaulettes on it.
<space=1em>Regulations
<space=1em>The rules for wearing the uniform were regulated by orders and the schedule of holidays, which included both religious holidays and days of honoring members of the royal family.
<space=1em>The following uniform was established for staff officers and senior officers of the Corps of Railway Engineers. A half-caftan of dark green cloth, double-breasted, fastened with six buttons, with an emblem in the form of an anchor and an axe. The collar is rounded, with two silver buttonholes. The cuff is without flaps. A half-caftan, harem pants — of dark green cloth. The swords of officers of the Institute of Railways and the Construction School were replaced by infantry-style sabres with leather scabbards and a sword belt made of black patent leather. A cloak — of dark gray cloth, double-breasted with six buttons.
<space=1em>New trends
<space=1em>In 1855, after the death of Tsar Nicholas I in Russia, new trends in the life of the country were outlined. Representatives of the unprivileged environment, people from among minor officials, bourgeois, merchants and wealthy peasants, began to come forward. All lower ranks of the civil departments of the Nicholas era wore military-style uniforms. Belonging to a particular department was determined by the color of the cloth of the uniform, the color of the piping and the fittings with emblems.
<space=1em>Military cut
<space=1em>From 1855 further changes took place. They affected the uniforms of employees of all ranks of the Department of Railways. All ranks: generals, staff and chief officers, doctors and civil officials — were required to wear military-style uniforms.

Хронология:
<space=1em>The history of the Ministry of Railways dates back much earlier than the appearance of the first railway. But historically it turned out that by the time of its liquidation in 2004 it dealt only with railways (since 1931). <space=1em>In 1809, a manifesto was issued on the establishment of the Main Directorate of Water and Land Communications. This happened on the initiative of Russian statesmen M. M. Speransky and N. P. Rumyantsev. At the same time as the department, the Corps of Railway Engineers and the Institute of the Corps of Railway Engineers were created. The Corps was created to manage the construction of roads, bridges, hydraulic structures, and the development of waterways. The Institute was founded to train engineering personnel for this Corps. The first inspector (chief) of the Institute was Lieutenant General A. A. Betancourt. <space=1em>The Corps and the Institute were under martial law, but as part of the Department of Railways, not the Ministry of War. The engineers of the corps, teachers and scientists had military ranks. They were required to wear military uniforms. <space=1em>The rules for wearing the uniform were regulated by orders and the schedule of holidays, which included both religious holidays and days honoring members of the royal family. <space=1em>The dress uniform required a full uniform with a sash and sword. The everyday uniform required a double-breasted frock coat in the color of the uniform. <space=1em>In 1855, after the death of Tsar Nicholas I, new trends in the life of the country were outlined in Russia. Certain sectors of the economy, which had a semi-military status and, accordingly, a military uniform, were transferred to the civilian sphere. Corresponding changes also took place in the Main Directorate of Communications. Representatives of the unprivileged environment, people from among minor officials, bourgeois, merchants and wealthy peasants, began to come forward. Accordingly, changes in military and civilian uniforms took place. All lower ranks of the civil departments of the Nicholas era wore military-style uniforms. Belonging to a particular department was determined by the color of the cloth of the uniform, the color of the piping and the fittings with emblems. <space=1em>Further changes took place from 1855. They affected the uniforms of employees of all ranks of the Department of Communications: in the hardcoat crew (river police), in military workers' companies, prison battalions, and also in the main administration of the department. All ranks: generals, staff and chief officers, doctors and civilian officials - were required to wear military-style uniforms.
