Хронология:  <space=1em>The name Oppeln comes from the city of Oppeln in East Prussia, now Opole in Poland. In Germany, all types of freight cars were named after cities from 1921. This system of categories (Gattung) was amended in 1926, 1935 and 1942. <space=1em>The first prototype cars were built as early as 1934 to find an alternative to the Gr Kassel type car. These freight cars are also known as langen Oppeln (long Oppeln) or Dresden. <space=1em>The covered freight car type Gs Oppeln was designed for accelerated freight transport and was produced in series from 1937. From 1938, the cars were manufactured using welding. <space=1em>Kurzer Oppeln carriages were produced in large numbers at the start of World War II, with around 28,100 built by 1945, 6,150 of which were equipped with hand brakes, meaning they had a brakeman's cab. They were built by many factories in occupied Europe during the war. <space=1em>The carriage on display in the museum is a kurzer Oppeln. It was built at the Steinfurt carriage works in Königsberg, Germany (now Kaliningrad, Russia) in 1942. It was either captured by the USSR or given to it as reparations and converted to operate on the 1,524 mm gauge railways of the USSR. <space=1em>It was acquired by the museum from track machine station #28 (Gory) in 1996.
