<space=1em>Shortage

<space=1em>Before the revolution, the fleet of gondola cars in Russia was small. They were mainly two-axle with a wooden body and doors in the middle of the car. Materials were loaded and unloaded through them using human power: shovels or wheelbarrows.

<space=1em>To eliminate the shortage, they developed the "Cut". The roof of a normal freight car (NTV) was cut off. There were over 500,000 NTVs in the railway fleet.

<space=1em>Horses and People
<space=1em>These cars were called "normal" because they had standard openings, areas and bodies, suspension parts, wheel pairs, traction and harness devices, door rollers, gussets, squares, and the like. They were manufactured by all factories in the country. The NTV had bunks and stoves. They could hold 40 people or eight horses.

<space=1em>Improvement
<space=1em>Initially, the NTV had a carrying capacity of 750 poods. Gradually, it was increased to 1,000 by strengthening the crew and traction devices. The car frame was wood and metal, the body was solid wood, and the roof was covered with roofing iron.

<space=1em>After the revolution, the chassis was improved, due to which the carrying capacity increased to 16.5–18 tons. The NTV was equipped with a Matrosov pneumatic brake, but the frame did not allow for the installation of an automatic coupling.

<space=1em>Reconstruction

<space=1em>By the beginning of the 1950s many of the NTVs in operation were reconstructed. This is how the NTV with a load capacity of up to 20 t and the ability to install an automatic coupling appeared. The metal side of the frame, buffer beam, suspension parts, axle boxes, and buffers remained from the basic version. The body already had a metal frame. The main dimensions of the reconstructed NTV are identical to the dimensions of the classic type. The cars were reconstructed from 1953 to 1958

<space=1em>Fine work

<space=1em>When creating the "Cut", a strapping belt was welded to the top of the uprights cut to height. Sometimes the doors were shortened, but more often the side was made solid. To prevent the sides from bursting, cross braces made of angles were welded to the upper tie belt, usually two pieces in the middle of the car.

<space=1em>The "cuts" were used to remove scrap metal, slag from boiler houses, garbage, and store coal. They circulated within enterprises, so they were painted yellow.

<space=1em>The "cut" of the era

<space=1em>The "cut" presented at the Museum of Russian Railways became an exhibit in 1990 It came from the Babayevo depot of the October Railway.

Хронология: <space=1em>Open wagons or gondola cars are used to transport bulk cargo that is not afraid of precipitation. <space=1em>In pre-revolutionary times, the fleet of gondola cars was small and varied compared to the fleet of covered wagons. These were mainly two-axle gondola cars with a wooden body and doors in the middle of the car. Loading and unloading of cargo by human power took place through these doors: with shovels or on wheelbarrows. <space=1em>The first gondola cars appeared in 1862 on the Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod Railway. They were used on the Ural Mining and Metallurgical Railway and the Donetsk Coal Railway. Most of them were concentrated on the Ekaterininskaya Railway, which served the Donetsk Coal Basin <space=1em>The basis of the freight fleet of pre-revolutionary Russia was normal freight cars (NTV). Their number on the network exceeded 500,000 units. They were used for a long time on the railway network until the 60s of the 20th century. <space=1em>The "normality" consisted in the fact that they had standard door opening dimensions, area and volume of the body. They had standard suspension parts, wheel pairs, traction and harness devices and even all metal parts: door rollers, gussets, squares and the like. They were manufactured by all factories in the Russian Empire. All cars had devices for installing bunks and a stove, which allowed them to be used for military and human transportation. The cars were designed to carry 40 people or 8 horses. <space=1em>This simplified their handling and operation throughout the entire railway network. Initially, these two-axle cars had a load capacity of 750 poods. Gradually, it was increased first to 900, and then to 1,000 poods by strengthening the crew and traction devices. The car frame was wood and metal, the body was solid wood, the roof was covered with roofing iron. <space=1em>In the post-revolutionary period, the running gear of the car was reinforced again, due to which the load capacity increased to 16.5-18 tons. The cars were equipped with a Matrosov pneumatic brake, but the car frame did not allow the installation of an automatic coupling. <space=1em>A large number of cars of the NTV type, which were in operation, by the beginning of the 1950s were decided to be completely reconstructed at car repair plants. This is how the reconstructed NTV car type appeared. Its load capacity was increased to 20 tons and it was possible to install an automatic coupling. In fact, only metal parts remained from the car: the side of the frame, the buffer beam, suspension parts, axle boxes, and buffers. The car body already had a metal frame. The main dimensions of the reconstructed car are identical to the dimensions of the classic NTV. The cars were rebuilt from 1953 to 1958. Gondola cars were not produced in car factories and workshops. <space=1em>For business purposes, gondola cars were made from NTV covered cars by cutting off the upper part of the car body. Hence the name - "Cut". <space=1em>The car located in the museum was delivered to the museum from the Babayevo locomotive depot of the October Railway in 1990.
