<space=1em>Mass production
<space=1em>The Italian covered wagon F type 29 — a universal freight car, developed in the late 1930s. Between 1937 and 1946, more than 14,000 were built, making the type 29one of the most mass-produced in Italy.
<space=1em>Smoothness and speed
<space=1em>The design of the cars had a wide wheelbase, which ensured a smooth ride at speeds of up to 90 km/h. Initially, they had wooden paneling, later — metal. Variants were produced with a brake box and a hand brake, as well as without them.
<space=1em>The design of these cars is very similar to the German Oppeln type, which also had a wide wheelbase with short frame overhangs. This similarity is not accidental — both types were designed with possible use in passenger trains in mind, which required a smooth ride at high speeds.
<space=1em>Specialized versions were created on the basis of this type, including refrigerator cars and even cars with an aluminum body for transporting food. Regular ones were used to transport various goods, soldiers or animals.
<space=1em>The loser pays
<space=1em>During World War II, these cars were used throughout Europe. When Italy was among the defeated, many of them ended up in the USSR, East and West Germany, Poland and Hungary as war trophies.
<space=1em>A Long Way
<space=1em>One of these cars with the number ОК 470934 is now in the Museum of Russian Railways. It was built at the San Giorgio plant in 1939, after the war it ended up in the USSR and was used for a long time on Soviet railways. In 1996 it was transferred to the museum by the Gory track machine station of the October Railway.
<space=1em>Reliable design
<space=1em>In the USSR, these "foreigners" were used on par with domestic models. The versatility and reliability of the design allowed them to remain in operation for many years. Covered Italian cars contributed to the restoration and development of the economy of the Soviet Union in the post-war period.

Хронология:
<space=1em>During and after the Great Patriotic War, many carriages that had previously been used on European railways ended up on the USSR railways. Some of them were war trophies, and some were rolling stock that had been transferred for what had been lost during the war. <space=1em>The different track gauges did not allow this rolling stock to be used on the general network, and these were thousands of locomotives and tens of thousands of carriages. This problem remained relevant in 1940, when the territories of the Baltic republics, Bessarabia, Western Ukraine and Western Belarus were annexed to the USSR. Before the war, about 2,100 km of main lines in these territories were rebuilt. Secondary and outlying lines were not rebuilt, since rebuilding the entire rolling stock was not economically feasible. <space=1em>The train included dozens of types of steam locomotives, many of which were "aged". And also hundreds of different types of cars with different wheel sets, axle boxes, etc. It was impossible to exclude this train from the inventory, transfer or sell it - there would be nowhere to get a new one to replace it. Therefore, immediately after the war, European rolling stock was used in the annexed territories. <space=1em>As the railway lines were rebuilt, the rolling stock was selectively converted to a wide gauge. The track width and the type of wheel sets determine the width of the car frame. Therefore, when installing wheel sets for a wide gauge, it was necessary to redesign the axle box assembly. That is, the assembly in which the wheel set rotates. To do this, the guide axle boxes, or more correctly, the jaws, were redesigned. They were bent so as to increase the distance between the axle boxes in which the axle is located. In this case, it was necessary to move the spring suspension mount, for which additional supports were welded to the car frame. This feature makes it very easy to determine the origin of the car and understand whether it is European or not. <space=1em>The F type 29 car of the Italian Railways — FS (Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane) — is a typical Italian covered freight car.
