First class carriage compartment

<space=1em>Highest comfort

<space=1em>In pre-revolutionary Russia, passenger carriages were divided into I, II, III and IV class. As a rule, the privileged public traveled in carriages of I and II class — nobles, merchants, distinguished citizens, officers, industrialists. The commoners — peasants, workers, small shopkeepers, servants — traveled in carriages of III and IV class. Moreover, class IV carriages were mainly used in the late 19th — early 20th centuries for transporting peasant settlers who, as a result of the reforms of Witte and Stolypin, went from Central Russia to Siberia and the Far East to develop uninhabited but rich territories.

<space=1em>The compartment of a class I carriage was the most comfortable on the railways. A ticket here cost about one and a half times more than a class II ticket, and two and a half times more than a class III ticket.

<space=1em>Chair-beds

<space=1em>Chair-beds were developed to increase the comfort of class I passengers. They were used for sitting during the day, and unfolded for sleeping at night. Carriages with such places were called "chair-bed carriages". The chairs were located in a common room and were staggered along the entire carriage. One way or another, the chair-bed carriages were not comfortable enough for a full rest on the way. Therefore, it was decided to abandon the chair-bed carriages and replace them with sleeping carriages.
