Communications on Russian railways

Telegraph communications in Russia appeared in the first half of the 19th century, simultaneously with the construction of the first railways. At that time, such type of communication was used exclusively for state and military needs of the country. Initially, to transmit messages on the railway, non-electric methods of telegraphy — optical and sound telegraphs — were used. Their shortcomings included low speed of information transfer, dependence on time of day and weather, and inability to set up encrypted information transfer.

The foundations of telegraphy in Russia were laid down in the works of P.L. Schilling, who created the first set of devices for electric telegraph communication in 1832. In 1843, a telegraph line was built between St. Petersburg and Tsarskoe Selo (25 km). A whole series of apparatuses for telegraph lines was developed by B.S. Jacobi, who created the electromagnetic writing telegraph apparatus in 1839.

With the growth of industry and expansion of the railway network, about 27,000 kilometers of telegraph communication lines and 160 telegraph stations were operated in Russia already by 1860, and by 1870 these indicators increased to 91,000 kilometers and 714 stations, respectively. In 1871, the Moscow-Vladivostok telegraph line, the longest in the world (about 12,000 km) was opened. However it was even earlier, in 1854, that there appeared international, and after laying submarine communication cablesm intercontinental lines of telegraph communication.

The use of telegraph communication in the railway industry was not only a reliable way to regulate the movement of trains, but also to ensure safety of their movement.
