Steam locomotives
ER 750-04
<space=1em><b>Production decline</b>
<space=1em>During the military operations of the Great Patriotic War, in <nobr>1941–1942</nobr> all major locomotive-building plants of the USSR, with the exception of Kolomensky, found themselves in the territory temporarily occupied by German troops. The equipment of these plants was partially transported to the east of the country during the evacuation, and partially destroyed or left in the occupied territory.
<space=1em>Locomotive-building plants located in the east of the country were either in the process of expanding production after evacuation from the western regions (Krasnoyarsk), or initially had small production capacities (Ulan-Ude). As a result, there was an almost complete curtailment of locomotive construction in the USSR. In <nobr>1942</nobr> only about ten new locomotives were delivered to the railways.
<space=1em><b>The most important task</b>
<space=1em><nobr>May 22</nobr> <nobr>1943</nobr> Deputy Chairman of the State Defense Committee <nobr>V.M. Molotov</nobr> signed the GOKO decree <nobr>№ 3410s</nobr> "On the production of new steam locomotives in <nobr>1943</nobr> and the preparation of capacities for their production in <nobr>1944</nobr>". In this decree, the restoration and production of new steam locomotives in <nobr>1943</nobr> was called: "the most important military-economic task".
<space=1em>In accordance with this resolution, the Kolomna Plant was assigned a program for the construction of <nobr>20 steam locomotives</nobr> in <nobr>the 3rd and 4th quarters</nobr> <nobr>of 1943</nobr> and was instructed to create by <nobr>January 1</nobr> <nobr>of 1944</nobr> production capacities that would ensure the production of <nobr>130 machines</nobr> of the ER</nobr> series during the year. In order to launch the production of locomotives, the Kolomna Plant was partially relieved of its military production assignment (the construction of armored trains, the casting of turrets for T-34 tanks</nobr> <nobr>etc.</nobr>).
<space=1em><b>Project ER</b>
<space=1em>For production at the Kolomna Plant, the project of the pre-war ER steam locomotive was revised: the feeder cap was cancelled, welded longitudinal seams of the boiler were introduced, a four-hole cone was installed, and some other changes were made. The appearance of the machine changed significantly: the front ladders for entering the bypass bridges were made inclined, the fence along the boiler was not installed, instead, handrails were mounted, fixed to the boiler. A large skylight was installed on the roof of the booth, the sandbox was combined with the steam cap. The steam locomotive received the factory designation P28.
<space=1em>The first three locomotives were produced in accordance with this project: <nobr>ЭР17-750 01</nobr>, <nobr>ЭР 750 02</nobr> and <nobr>ЭР 750 03</nobr>. The following locomotives received boilers from the SU machines, produced at the Kolomensky Plant in the pre-war period, instead of the boilers of the E series locomotives. Due to the similar dimensions of the boilers of the SU and E locomotives, it was possible to place them on the frame of the new locomotives without any special alterations to the latter. Tenders for the first Kolomna ER machines were assembled from the backlog of SO steam locomotive tender parts; tenders of the P27 type were attached to subsequent locomotives.
<space=1em><b>22 steam locomotives</b>
<space=1em>In <nobr>1943</nobr> the Kolomna plant built ten ER series steam locomotives. Of these, seven were sent to the NKPS network, and three, which received four-digit numbers, were sent to work on industrial access roads. In <nobr>1944</nobr> another <nobr>12 ER</nobr> steam locomotives were produced in Kolomna, all of them were sent to the NKPS network. Most of the Kolomna ER locomotives that arrived on the NKPS tracks were sent to work on the Kazan railway.
<space=1em>After the end of the Great Patriotic War, when developing the drawings of the ER series steam locomotives for construction abroad, the experience of building these few Kolomna locomotives was taken into account.
<space=1em><b>Museum exhibit</b>
<space=1em>Currently, five ER series steam locomotives built in <nobr>1943–1944</nobr> are preserved on pedestals and in railway museums in the post-Soviet space.</nobr> The most valuable of them is, without a doubt, the very <nobr>first one —</nobr> <nobr>ER17-750 01</nobr>, which is preserved in Belarus in the Brest Railway Museum.
<space=1em>Steam locomotive <nobr>ER 750 04</nobr> after construction <nobr>on November 20</nobr> <nobr>1943</nobr> was put into operation on the Moscow-Kursk Railway. From October <nobr>1944</nobr> it was used on the Stalin (from November <nobr>1961 —</nobr> the Dnieper) railway. After the end of its service, the locomotive was mothballed and kept in reserve. In <nobr>1990</nobr> it was sent from the Kamysh-Zarya reserve base to Moscow to the experimental ring of the All-Russian Research Institute of Railway Transport at Shcherbinka station, where equipment for the future Moscow Railway Museum was assembled.
<space=1em>However, due to various reasons, the museum was never built, and the collected equipment began to be looted. There was a real danger of the destruction of valuable examples of historical rolling stock. In these circumstances, the Central Museum of the October Railway approached VNIIZhT with a request to transfer several steam locomotives from the territory of the experimental ring for permanent storage and exhibition in the museum of railway equipment at the Shushary station.
<space=1em>The museum's request was granted, the steam locomotive <nobr>ЭР 750 04</nobr> was prepared for transportation by museum specialists and in August <nobr>1997</nobr> was relocated to Shushary. From 2001 to <nobr>2016</nobr> it was on display at the Central Museum of the October Railway at the former Varshavsky Station in St. Petersburg.

Хронология:
During the Great Patriotic War, it was not possible to establish steam locomotive construction at the evacuated plants. The main Soviet steam locomotive factories (Kharkov, Lugansk, Bryansk, and Novocherkassk plants) ended up in the occupied territory. Bryansk plant and part of the locomotive department of the Kharkov plant were evacuated to Krasnoyarsk, Kolomna plant to Molotov (Perm); in 1942, the equipment of the Lugansk plant was evacuated to Kolomna, Omsk, Ulan-Ude and Alma-Ata, the Novocherkassk plant - to Votkinsk.
Since Kolomna was not occupied, part of the equipment remained at the plant (part was supplemented by those evacuated from Lugansk), including the stock for the production of steam locomotives. Taking into account the presence of this factor, a steam locomotive of the Er750 series (P28 - Project 28) was designed in February 1943, where steam boilers of the Su series steam locomotives that were not completed in 1941 were used.
They were originally designated by the 1925 designation system as Er17-750-01.
In 1943, 7 steam locomotives Er750-01 - ER750-07 (serial numbers 8381-8387) and 15 steam locomotives Er750-08 - Er750-22 (serial numbers 8388 - 8402) were built. The last three of them entered the industrial railways.
With the beginning of the war, the factory numbering at the Kolomna plant was interrupted, approximately at the serial number 8290/1941, which belonged to the last known steam locomotive built - Sum 218-38 (however, it was not accepted by the People's Commissariat for Lines of Communications). Also, in the serial numbering, numbers (8219-8248) were also assigned for 30 steam locomotives of the P24 type, of which only 9 were built. The construction of steam locomotives began in 1943 with the Er750-01, which was assigned the serial number 8381/1943, because this number began a new sheet of the serial number book.
To date, 4 of the 22 steam locomotives have survived, despite the fact that the non-standard steam locomotive has always been a kind of outcast on the tracks of the Ministry of Railways.
Apparently, the quality and the put heart of the plant’s workers, who tried to do everything for the Victory, played a role and extended their life.

The steam locomotive Er750-04 entered the Moscow-Kursk railway after being built on November 20, 1943. Since October 1944, the steam locomotive had been operated on the Stalin railway (since 1961 it has changed its name to Pridneprovskaya railway). After the end of operation, the locomotive was mothballed and was in reserve, in 1990 it was sent to Moscow, to the Test Loop of VNIIZhT (All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Railway Transport) at the Shcherbinka station, as a potential exhibit of the future Moscow Railway Museum.
However, for various reasons, this museum was never created. The steam locomotive ER750-04 was transferred to the Central Museum of the October Railway in 1997. From 2001 to 2016, the steam locomotive was on display at the museum at the former Varshavsky railway station in St. Petersburg.
