Steam locomotives
EM730-31
<space=1em><b>A new member of the family</b>
<space=1em>The EM series appeared on the basis of the E series — the most common on Russian railways. The letter "m" in the subfamily name means "modernized". The EM series was produced from 1912 to <nobr>1957</nobr> at factories in Russia, Germany and Sweden.
<space=1em>The EM series project was presented in <nobr>1909</nobr> by engineer Vaclav Lopushinsky and the head of the rolling stock and traction service of the Vladikavkaz Railway Mikhail Pravosudovich. <space=1em><b>After the war</b>
<space=1em>The civil war bled industrial enterprises dry: there were not enough people and equipment to produce steam locomotives. In <nobr>1920</nobr> the government decided to order new steam locomotives in Germany and Sweden based on the designs of the Lugansk plant.
<space=1em>Professor Yuri Lomonosov conducts tests of modern steam locomotives at that time. Their results formed the basis for the modifications of the E series. This is how the Eu series appeared, that is, the improved E series.
<space=1em><b>Differences between the EM and the Eu</b>
<space=1em>It is difficult for a non-specialist to distinguish the Eu series from the EM. In the number intervals <nobr>707–710,</nobr> <nobr>715–717</nobr> you can find both versions. In addition, during major repairs, boilers, fireboxes and other equipment could be replaced.
<space=1em>Closed counter-cabins were equipped by their own efforts at depots or at factories during repairs. Despite the fact that the locomotive gave off a lot of heat, it was not hot in it in the frost of <nobr>-30 °C</nobr>. To keep warm, you had to work with a shovel, throwing in coal. Coal feeders were not installed on the locomotives of this family.
<space=1em><b>In the museum</b>

Хронология:
The history of the Em series (E modernized) steam locomotive dates back to the steam locomotive of E series. These locomotives received the designation of the series as E in 1912 to combine locomotives of the same series, previously receiving their different designations on the railways, into one. The series were assigned alphabetically from A to Yat. Therefore, there were quite exotic series of steam locomotives for today, such as: Fita, I, Izhitsa. Sometimes the letter was assigned according to the manufacturer's plant, for example, K - Kolomna, B - Bryansk. The letter E was free.
Almost the last letter in the alphabet, it gave its name to the largest family of steam locomotives. In total, about 10 500 steam locomotives of the E series were built.
It was the largest family on the Russian Railways.
In 1909, the Head of the rolling stock and traction service of the Vladikavkaz railway M.E. Pravosudovich and the Head of the technical bureau, engineer V. I. Lopushinsky drew up a draft design of a ₀-5-₀ steam locomotive with a rated drawing force of 13,5 tons, which ensured the management of trains of 60 two-axle cars with a total weight of 1 300 tons.
The constructive development of the project was entrusted to the Lugansk diesel-locomotive-building works, which itself showed interest in the ₀-5-₀ steam locomotive. The plant produced the first 15 steam locomotives ordered by the Vladikavkaz Railway in 1912. Almost immediately, the power of the locomotive in the cylinders was increased by increasing their diameter from 600 to 630 mm. There were also other improvements, and as a result, the locomotive was accepted for construction, both for state and private railways.
Since 1915, steam locomotives of this series began to build by the Sormovo and Kharkov plants, and from 1916 - by the Kolomna and Bryansk plants. In total, 1 528 ones were built until 1926.
The consequences of the civil war strongly affected the state of the locomotive fleet, the plants were completely disorganized, there was a shortage of skilled workers, foremen and engineers, a lack of metal, and much more. The plants gradually, as best they could, completed the steam locomotives according to pre-revolutionary orders. All steam locomotive-building plants were machine-building ones before, and during the First World War they reoriented its production to the production of military products from shells and cannons to sanitary gigs.
Therefore, in 1920, the Government decided to order steam locomotives abroad: 500 in Sweden and 700 in Germany according to the drawings of the Lugansk diesel-locomotive-building works of 1917. For this purpose, a special Railroad Mission led by Professor Yu.V. Lomonosov was organized. Under his leadership, tests of modern steam locomotives were carried out in 1914 and 1915. The test results influenced, among other things, the refinement of the E series steam locomotive.
When the production of locomotives of the E series was resumed in 1926, the Schmidt's four-pipe double-turn superheater was replaced with a six-pipe single-turn superheater of S. M. Chusov, in order to raise the temperature of the superheated steam. This gave an increase in its temperature from 300 to 350 degrees Celsius. And made these locomotives more economical.
Since 1926, they were assigned to the Eu series (E reinforced). These locomotives were built at the Kolomna, Sormovo, Voroshilovgrad (Lugansk), Kharkov and Bryansk diesel-locomotive-building works. A total of about 2 500 ones.
Modernized steam locomotives of the Em series became a further development. They began to be built at different plants in 1931 and 1932. The digital designation system for steam locomotives, introduced in 1926, only added confusion to the designation of the series. So steam locomotives of the Eu series could be designated 707-xx, and the same 707 series could also be steam locomotives of the Em series. The plants were given an interval of numbers, in which they produced steam locomotives. They were not given new digital series to designate a new type of steam locomotive. The Kharkov, Lugansk, Sormovo and Bryansk diesel-locomotive-building works continued to produce steam locomotives Eu and Em without interruption and assign them the current five-digit numbers.
The main innovation was an increase in the boiler power, in connection with which its working pressure was increased from 12 to 14 kg/cm². This resulted in reinforcing welds on the boiler and reinforcing parts of the propulsion mechanism.
They were built until 1935, and the approximate number of 2 325 (2 694 according to V. A. Rakov) locos, due to the complexity of the division within the number designations, it is difficult to give an exact figure. Some steam locomotives were supplied directly for work in industry and were not registered with the NKPS (Ministry of Railways). For those interested in more details on the E series locomotives, we can recommend the book by L.L. Makarov "Steam locomotives of the E series".
The locomotives of this "family" underwent further not modernization, but reconstruction and were produced until 1957.
Em 730-31 was built by the Sormovo plant in 1934.
By 1941 it was operated on the Moscow-Donbass railway. In 1944 it was included in the inventory of the North-Donetsk railway from where it was transferred to the Moscow-Kiev railway in 1949. Since 1959, it has been located in the fleet of the Kalinin railway, the last place of work since 1961 is the October Railway.
It was excluded from the inventory hauling equipment on March 17, 1987. Entered the museum from the Rzhev locomotive depot of the October Railway in 1987. It was repaired by ARS-M LLC in 2017.
