Diesel locomotives

TE2-414

<space=1em>Narrowly specialized

<space=1em>The TE2 series diesel locomotives were created at the Kharkov Transport Engineering Plant in the late 1940s. The experience of building the first domestic serial post-war diesel locomotives of the TE1 series was taken into account. However, unlike the TE1, which were essentially universal locomotives suitable for both mainline and shunting work, the TE2 were created as mainline freight locomotives, which determined a number of features implemented in their design.

<space=1em>The new TE2 series diesel locomotive uses the same basic power equipment as the TE1: a D50 diesel, a traction generator MPT-84/39, traction electric motors DK-304B, as well as a two-machine unit, a compressor etc. However, unlike the TE1, the TE2 diesel locomotive body is not of the bonnet type, but of the wagon type, with the control cabin located at its end, which is much more suitable for train operation.

<space=1em>The number of traction electric motors per diesel generator set, which was six on the TE1, has been reduced to four on the TE2 diesel locomotive. This eliminated one of the main disadvantages of the TE1 — the "overmotoring" of the locomotive with underutilization of diesel power at high speeds. In addition, changes were made to the electrical circuits and an improved design of the refrigeration unit was used.

<space=1em>Two sections

<space=1em>Finally, the most important moment — the TE2 diesel locomotive is made in two sections, that is, consisting of two identical sections. In fact, it was two autonomous locomotives coupled to each other, working together in a permanent composition and controlled from one post, united under one operational number.

<space=1em>In the absence of high-power diesel engines mastered in production, the use of two sections made it possible to use the new diesel locomotives for hauling freight trains without reducing their weight rating compared to steam traction. The TE2 became the first domestic diesel locomotive to be mass-produced. Later, the two-section design would become classic for Soviet mainline freight diesel locomotives.

<space=1em>Serial Production

<space=1em>The first locomotive TE2 001 was built in December 1948, the second TE2 002 — in July 1949. After testing the prototypes, serial production of the TE2 began, which continued until 1955. A total of 528 locomotives of this series (№ 001–528) were built during this time. In 1952 a group of workers from the Kharkov plant and the diesel locomotive department of the Ministry of Railways were awarded the Stalin Prize of the second degree for the creation of the design and organization of serial production of the TE2 diesel locomotives.

<space=1em>Where there is little water

<space=1em>The first TE2 series diesel locomotives were sent from production to railways located mainly in the Central Asian regions of the USSR, where, in conditions of a shortage of good quality water, the use of diesel traction was especially effective compared to steam traction. Later, the locomotives were delivered to railways in many other regions of the country and eventually became quite widespread on the network of the Ministry of Railways, having proven themselves to be simple and fairly reliable machines.

<space=1em>At the end of the 1950s the majority of TE2 series diesel locomotives were used on the Kazakh, Moscow-Okruzhnaya, Ordzhonikidzevskaya, Orenburgskaya, Privolzhskaya and Tashkent railways. Some machines also worked on the Zabaikalskaya, Kirovskaya, Moscow-Ryazanskaya, Oktyabrskaya, Omskaya and Severnaya railways. On many of them, it was with the arrival of the TE2 that the transition from steam traction to diesel locomotive traction began.

<space=1em>Most of the TE2 series diesel locomotives served on domestic railways until the late 1970s — early 1980s. The very last of these locomotives were decommissioned in the early 1990s. In addition, at the end of the 1950s, a significant number of TE2 series diesel locomotives were transferred to the Mongolian People's Republic, where they served on the Ulaanbaatar Railway.

<space=1em>In the museum

<space=1em>The locomotive TE2 414 (sections No. 827 and 828), presented in the museum, was built in 1954 and was initially used on the Orenburg, Kazakh and Volga railways. In 1964 the locomotive was transferred to the October Railway, where it was decommissioned in 1987 It was received by the museum from the Murmansk locomotive depot in 1990
