Diesel locomotives

TE3-1001

<space=1em><b>Progressive traction</b>

<space=1em>In the mid-1950s, a large-scale process of replacing steam locomotives with "progressive types of traction" — diesel and electric — began on the USSR railway transport. For train operation on sections and entire lines of railways that were being converted to diesel traction, a large number of new powerful diesel locomotives were required that could successfully replace steam locomotives. The TE1 and TE2 series machines created in the USSR in the second half of the 1940s no longer met such requirements — more powerful locomotives were needed.

<space=1em><b>Development of the project</b>

<space=1em>In <nobr>1952–1953</nobr> the Kharkov Plant of Transport Engineering (KhZTM) created a new model of a mainline diesel locomotive, designated the TE3 series. This is a two-section locomotive consisting of two identical six-axle sections. Each section is equipped with a ten-cylinder, two-stroke diesel 2D100 with a capacity of <nobr>2,000 hp</nobr> of a very unique design (with two crankshafts and counter-moving pistons), the prototype of which was the diesel engine of the American company Fairbanks-Morse, installed on ships.

<space=1em>The power transmission on the locomotive is electric, direct current. The traction generator <nobr>МПТ-99/47</nobr> had a continuous power of <nobr>1,350 kW</nobr>. The traction motors <nobr>ЭДТ-200</nobr> with a continuous power of <nobr>200 kW</nobr> had a support-axial suspension. Automatic control of the power transmission was carried out by a special electric machine system for regulating the excitation of the traction generator. All the main electrical equipment was designed and manufactured at the Electrotyazhmash plant in Kharkov.

<space=1em><b>Into series</b>

<space=1em>The first sample of the TE3 diesel locomotive was manufactured at KhZTM in early <nobr>1954</nobr> Due to the positive results of the tests of this locomotive, even before their official completion, the new machine was launched into serial production in <nobr>1955</nobr>. Moreover, starting from the following year, the production of TE3 series diesel locomotives was organized simultaneously at three plants. In addition to KhZTM (locomotives with <nobr>№ 001</nobr> and higher were produced here), similar locomotives began to be produced at Kolomensky (with <nobr>№ 1001</nobr> and higher) and Lugansk (Voroshilovgrad, with <nobr>№ 2001</nobr> and higher) plants.

<space=1em>During serial production, numerous changes and improvements were made to the design of the locomotive. Since <nobr>1957</nobr> a new design of the control cabin was used (as on TE7 diesel locomotives). Since <nobr>1959</nobr> buffers were no longer installed on the front part of the body. Since <nobr>1962</nobr> new design bogies have been used <nobr>etc.</nobr>

<space=1em><b>Mass production</b>

<space=1em>TE3 series diesel locomotives were produced for <nobr>20 years</nobr>, with the total number of vehicles produced at the Kharkov <nobr>plant —</nobr> <nobr>598 units</nobr> (<nobr>No. 001–598</nobr> in <nobr>1954–1962</nobr>), at the Kolomna <nobr>plant —</nobr> <nobr>406 units</nobr> (<nobr>No. 1001–1406</nobr> in <nobr>1956–1963</nobr>), at the Lugansk (Voroshilovgrad) <nobr>plant —</nobr> <nobr>5,805 units</nobr> (<nobr>№ 2001–7805</nobr> in <nobr>1956–1973</nobr>).

<space=1em>As can be seen, since <nobr>1963</nobr> diesel locomotives of the <nobr>TE3 series</nobr> were produced only at the Lugansk plant. The total number of machines built over two decades by three plants is <nobr>6,809 units</nobr>. Also serially produced were diesel locomotives of the <nobr>3TE3</nobr> series (three-section version) and TE7 (version for passenger traffic), created on the basis of the TE3.

<space=1em>As a result, the TE3 series locomotives became the most widespread mainline diesel locomotives on the roads of the USSR. They were used on almost all railways of the <nobr>MPS network —</nobr> from Brest to the Far East and from Arkhangelsk to Transcaucasia and Central Asia. The gradual exclusion of TE3 diesel locomotives from the inventory began in the <nobr>1980s</nobr> and was completed in the <nobr>1990s.</nobr>

<space=1em>On the October Railway, TE3 diesel locomotives in the <nobr>1970s–1980s</nobr> were the main series of diesel locomotives serving freight traffic on the road. The last machines of this series were written off here in the early <nobr>1990s.</nobr>

<space=1em><b>Museum exhibit</b>

<space=1em>The <nobr>TE3 1001</nobr> diesel locomotive presented in the museum, manufactured in <nobr>1956 </nobr>, is the first locomotive of this series built at the Kolomna plant (and the first diesel locomotive manufactured by this plant in the post-war period). After construction, it was sent to the Moscow-Kursk-Donbass Railway, in <nobr>1957</nobr> it was transferred to the South-Eastern, in <nobr>1958 —</nobr> to the Volga, in <nobr>1960 —</nobr> to the North Caucasian.

<space=1em>The diesel locomotive arrived at the museum from the Krasnodar depot of the North Caucasian Railway in <nobr>1996</nobr>

Хронология:  <space=1em>In the mid-1950s, a large-scale process of replacing steam locomotives with progressive types of traction - diesel and electric - began on the USSR railway transport. Sections and entire lines of railways were converted to diesel traction. For train work on them, a large number of new powerful diesel locomotives were required that could successfully replace steam locomotives. Diesel locomotives TE1 and TE2, which were produced from the late 40s to the mid-50s, were no longer suitable for this task. Although they had a good diesel engine D49, its power was not enough for train work. <space=1em>Back in 1940-1941, the Kolomensky Plant was conducting design work on a diesel locomotive of the T16 project - a single-section diesel locomotive on two three-axle bogies with electric transmission and an engine with a capacity of 2,000 hp. A new technical assignment for the design of a two-section diesel locomotive with an engine of the same power and a design speed of 90-100 km/h was issued in 1947. <space=1em>Design work began in 1950 at the Kharkov Plant of Transport Engineering and the Kharkov Plant of Diesel Locomotive Electrical Equipment. At the end of 1953, the construction of the experimental section of the TE3-001 diesel locomotive was completed, and at the beginning of 1954, the second section TE3-002 was released. In the TE series, it means "Diesel Locomotive with Electric Transmission", and 3 is the third type. <space=1em>In 1955, the Kharkov Plant manufactured diesel locomotives No. 002-011. Now each locomotive was assigned one number, and the sections were designated by the letters "A" and "B". The first two sections, TZ3-001 and TE3-002, were combined into one locomotive, numbered 001. <space=1em>Extensive testing took place in 1955 and 1956, and the necessary changes were made immediately to the 1955 pilot batch. <space=1em>In connection with this, serial production of TE3 series freight diesel locomotives was organized in a short time, which were built in large quantities at three plants from 1956 to 1973. <space=1em>The design of the locomotive apparently changed in 1957 — large windows appeared in the shape of the cabin for a better view of the track and visibility for the driver when coupling the locomotive to the car. <space=1em>Since mid-1959, buffers were no longer installed on diesel locomotives. <space=1em>The TE3 series freight diesel locomotives were produced at the Kharkov plant in 1955–1962 (No. 001–598), the Kolomensky plant in 1956–1963 (No. 1001–1406), and the Voroshilovgrad (Lugansk) plant in 1956–1973 (No. 2000–7805). In total, the three plants built 9,809 locomotives of this series. <space=1em>The appearance of non-electrified railways in the USSR was determined by diesel locomotives of this series for almost 30 years. <space=1em>The TE3-1001 diesel locomotive is the first TE-3 series locomotive, produced at the Kolomensky Diesel Locomotive Plant. Factory numbers of sections 0051 and 0052, it was sent to work at the Uzlovaya depot of the Moscow-Kursk-Donetsk Railway. <space=1em>In 1957, the locomotive was transferred to the South-Eastern Railway, in 1958 - to the Volga Railway, in 1960 - to the North Caucasian Railway. It was transferred to the museum from the Krasnodar depot of the North Caucasian Railway in 1996. <space=1em>Diesel locomotives TE3-1002 and 1010 worked out their days at the Likhobory depot of the Moscow Railway (Moscow Ring) until the mid-1980s.
