<space=1em><b>In case of war</b>
<space=1em>The transition to normal (i.e., corresponding to uniform standards, standardized) wagons at the end of the <nobr>19th century</nobr> was due to two factors: the need to introduce uninterrupted service between Russian railways and the desire to facilitate the transfer of troops in the event of war.
<space=1em><b>A successful design</b>
<space=1em>During the gradual standardization of covered wagons in Russia, the concepts of "state type", "normal dimensions", "normal drawings" appeared. The Resolution of the Ministry of Railways dated <nobr>May 23</nobr> <nobr>1892</nobr> <nobr>No. 1101</nobr> established the characteristics of a normal type covered wagon with a lifting force of <nobr>12.5 tons</nobr> (<nobr>750 poods</nobr>). The safety margin of the body of this design allowed for successive strengthening of the cars: up to <nobr>15 t</nobr> (<nobr>900 poods</nobr>) in <nobr>1909</nobr> (as a temporary measure this was allowed since <nobr>1905</nobr>), up to <nobr>16.5 t</nobr> (<nobr>1,000 poods</nobr>) in <nobr>1911</nobr> and up to <nobr>18 t</nobr> in <nobr>1933</nobr>
<space=1em>The type was chosen so successfully that the production of normal freight cars continued until the early <nobr>1930s</nobr>, and they turned out to be the most common type of cars. In addition, the design of the frame and the undercarriage were used in the development of numerous types of special cars.
<space=1em><b>Museum exhibit</b>
<space=1em>The car with the factory number 14688 was produced by the car-building plant of the joint-stock company "Dvigatel" in Reval (now Tallinn) in <nobr>1912.</nobr> Its fate is not traced, but it managed to survive until the <nobr>1990s.</nobr>, having avoided both modernization with the installation of a backbone beam and metal pillars, and conversion into a platform or gondola car. The car arrived at the museum from the Chudovskaya grain depot in <nobr>1993.</nobr>

Хронология:
<space=1em>To simplify the transition to non-transhipment service, and also guided by military considerations, in 1875 engineers of the Department of Railways of the Ministry of Railways first tried to standardize rolling stock. And the basic dimensions of freight cars were adopted as the norm when ordering them from factories. <space=1em>Such cars were called "normal". These were covered cars, manufactured according to uniform dimensions. And they were used not only for transporting goods. If necessary, removable equipment could be easily and quickly placed in them and the car could be converted into a military car. One car was designed to transport 40 people or 8 horses. For permanent military transportation, the cars were insulated by external lining and laying insulation: felt, pressed cork. A stove was also installed in the middle of the car. Such cars were called "teplushkas". <space=1em>In 1877, the width of the doorway was also standardized, which was adopted at 6 feet (1,830 mm). And in 1878, the design of freight cars was revised in order to strengthen it for the transition to a carrying capacity of 750 poods. <space=1em>Since 1885, at the advisory congresses of traction engineers of railway companies, drawings of cars of various designs that met the standard dimensions were considered. On May 23, 1892, according to the report of the Department of Railways No. 1101, drawings of a normal freight car with a carrying capacity of 750 poods were approved. Now it is known as the NTV car. <space=1em>It was this new design of a covered car that became mandatory for all state-owned and private railways for a long time. The covered car of the Southwestern Railway type of 1888 was taken as a basis. The car body pillars were attached to the car frame on outriggers. The car also had a brake platform on the console, which increased the length of the brake cars. Such technical solutions were used in cars produced back in 1869 by the Kovrov and St. Petersburg workshops of the Main Society of Russian Railways. The normal car also incorporated other design features accumulated over more than 20 years of producing freight cars in Russia. <space=1em>NTV cars were built by all car-building plants of the Russian Empire until 1918. A total of about 500,000 such cars were built. <space=1em>Various types of tank cars, cars for transporting alcohol, gondola cars, cars for transporting small livestock, refrigerator cars, fourth-class passenger cars, and service cars were built on the frames of these cars. <space=1em>The carriage presented in the museum was built at the carriage-building plant of the Joint-Stock Company "Dvigatel" in the city of Revel (Tallinn) in 1912, the factory number of the carriage is 14688. It was received by the museum from the Chudovskaya grain base in 1993.
