Electric locomotives
VL41-060
<space=1em>They made do with steam locomotives
<space=1em>Traditionally, Russian railways hardly ever used specially built steam locomotives for shunting work. This work was performed by older type steam locomotives, which could no longer be used for train traction. At the very beginning of railway construction, with little traffic and a lack of branching of station and access roads, this work was performed by train locomotives.
<space=1em>Side branch
<space=1em>With the transition to electric traction, attempts were made to create a shunting electric locomotive, but its dependence on the contact network limited its scope of application. The situation could have been corrected by installing an independent engine. However, such locomotives would have been significantly more expensive and more difficult to operate, so apart from individual experiments, this branch of electric locomotive construction did not develop.
<space=1em>Rapid development
<space=1em>In the 1950-1960s not only in the USSR, but also throughout the world, new types of technology — and not only railway ones — were rapidly developing. Much of what we use today — is the result of research and development of that period.
<space=1em>Autonomous engine
<space=1em>Similar experiments were also conducted on narrow-gauge electric locomotives. Thus, at the Demikhov Machine-Building Plant in 1959-1962 several types of electric locomotives with an autonomous engine were built, which successfully operated until the mid-1970s at the Shatura Peat Administration.
<space=1em>MPS Design Bureau Project
<space=1em>One of the attempts to develop a new type was the creation in 1963–1964 at the Dnepropetrovsk Electric Locomotive Plant of an electric locomotive, initially named D92, and then renamed VL41. In 1963 28 electric locomotives were built and in 1964 — 50.
<space=1em>In 1975 according to the MPS Design Bureau project on 13 locomotives ignitron rectifiers were replaced with silicon ones. The converted electric locomotives were designated VL41m. From the plant, locomotives were delivered to the East Siberian, Gorky, West Siberian, Moscow, Odessa-Kishinev, North Caucasus and South-Eastern railways.
<space=1em>Insufficient coupling
<space=1em>However, electric locomotives had insufficient coupling weight and were poorly suited for heavy shunting work, which limited their use. The main part was transferred to coal mining enterprises during 1970–1975. The last VL41 electric locomotives No. 060, 063, 073 and 076 were excluded from the inventory of the Ministry of Railways in 1990. One of these electric locomotives number VL41 060 was transferred to the Central Museum of Railway Transport.
