<space=1em><b>Before the Revolution</b>
<space=1em>Cars with a body length of <nobr>20 m</nobr>, ordered in the <nobr>1910s</nobr> by the Railway Administration, were the most advanced passenger cars on the state-owned railways of Russia. Later, they had a significant impact on the development of Soviet carriage building, up to the transition in the <nobr>1940s</nobr> from carriages with wooden bodies to all-metal ones.
<space=1em><b>"Red Arrow"</b>
<space=1em><nobr>June 10</nobr> <nobr>1931</nobr> on the <nobr>Leningrad - Moscow</nobr> line, the "Red Arrow" express began operating, initially consisting of soft carriages with a body length of <nobr>20 m</nobr>. Their coloring also corresponded to the <nobr>I class</nobr> in the <nobr>1910s</nobr>, and not to the name of the train.
<space=1em>Gradually, the old carriages were replaced by soft Soviet-built ones with a body length of <nobr>20.2 m</nobr>, which were painted in the same dark blue color. In the <nobr>1950s</nobr> the express completely changed its composition: carriages with wooden bodies were replaced with all-metal ones. And only in <nobr>1961</nobr> they became red.
<space=1em><b>Museum specimen</b>
<space=1em>The carriage was built in <nobr>1913–1918</nobr>, presumably by the <nobr>AO Sormovo</nobr> plant, as <nobr>Class I</nobr> (soft). From 1931 to the <nobr>1950s</nobr> this type was used as part of the Krasnaya Strela express. In <nobr>1973</nobr> the carriage, converted into a suburban carriage and numbered 3784, was not assigned to any depot, but was based in Mga and Chudovo at the disposal of the carriage service of the Leningrad-Moscow branch of the October Railway.
<space=1em>The carriage was delivered to the museum in <nobr>1993</nobr> from a fire train at the Chudovo station of the October Railway. It was restored during repair work carried out by <nobr>OOO ARS-M</nobr> in <nobr>2011–2012</nobr>

Хронология:
<space=1em>The branded train called "Red Arrow" on the Moscow-Leningrad route made its first trip on June 10, 1931. The average speed of the first trip was 69.8 km/h, and the travel time was 9 hours 45 minutes. In 1937-1938, special high-speed steam locomotives with a 2-3-2 wheel arrangement were created to pull this train. Two steam locomotives according to the P12 project were produced by the Kolomna Locomotive Plant and another one (No. 6998), according to its own design, was produced by the Voroshilovgrad Plant. <space=1em>Despite the name "Red Arrow", the carriages were painted dark blue (ultramarine), which, according to the pre-revolutionary paint scheme, corresponded to class I carriages. The first trains were assembled from class I and II carriages 20 meters long, which began to be built in 1911 for the State Railways. <space=1em>The first carriages with a body length of 20 meters were mixed-class carriages — I/II class mixes, then they began to produce I and II class carriages, and the last to be designed and built were II/III class mixes, produced in small quantities. III class carriages were designed, but not built. These carriages were produced until the beginning of 1918, when an order cancelled the production of new passenger carriages. <space=1em>Most passenger carriages produced before the early 1910s were three-axle, and their maximum length did not exceed 12 m. The presence of a third axle was due to the reduction in the axle load on the rails, which sometimes did not exceed 10 tons. Strengthening the track, which was methodically carried out throughout the entire railway network, made it possible to increase the load to 12.5 tons. Accordingly, it became possible to lengthen four-axle passenger carriages first from 15 to 18 m, and then to 20 m. With metal frames and wooden bodies, the tare weight of such carriages did not exceed 39.5 tons, and with electric lighting - 43 tons. <space=1em>Cars of this type were built by order of the State Railways at the Putilov, Sormovsky, Kolomensky, Phoenix plants (in Riga) and at the plant of the St. Petersburg Partnership. <space=1em>In the mid-1930s, the pre-revolutionary carriages in the Red Arrow trains were replaced with standard ones — "soft" and "hard" 20.2 m long built by the I. E. Yegorov Carriage Works in Leningrad. <space=1em>The carriage presented in the museum was built between 1913 and 1918, presumably by the Sormovo plant as a first-class passenger carriage (soft). In subsequent years of train operation, this carriage was re-equipped and used as a suburban carriage with an open saloon. The carriage was transferred to the museum from the Chudovo station of the October Railway in 1993 under the number Ok 3784. At the time of its arrival, it had a metal frame with a center beam installed during modernization and a chassis on reinforced double-suspension bogies of the TsVTK type. <space=1em>During repair work carried out by ARS-M LLC in 2011–2012, the body was restored to a condition similar to the time of construction. Number Ok 1201 is conditional.
