Exhibit description

Steam locomotive model Model of the steam locomotive series B 2-2-0

American approach

The display case features a model of a passenger steam locomotive type 2-2-0 of the St. Petersburg-Moscow Railway. The example of this locomotive shows the influence of American locomotive construction: two-axle bogies of the locomotive and tender, central single-buffer coupling, unusual steam distribution system.

In 1863–1867 some of the locomotives were completely rebuilt. The locomotives that were not rebuilt were designated series B. During the reconstruction, covered booths were installed for the locomotive crew, which was absolutely necessary in the harsh climatic conditions of Russia. Some locomotives received a conventional rocker steam distribution mechanism.

History

Chronology

  1. 1844 In connection with the start of construction of the St. Petersburg-Moscow railway in 1844, the Aleksandrovsky Foundry in St. Petersburg (now the Proletarsky Plant) was transferred from the Mining Department to the Main Administration of Railways. The plant was given on concession to engineers from the North American States. From 1845 to 1848, the plant, which received the name of the Aleksandrovsky Main Mechanical Plant, built 43 passenger steam locomotives of the 2-2-0 type for the St. Petersburg-Moscow Railway (since 1855, the Nikolayev Railway). Initially, these locomotives only had numbers.
  2. 1863–1867 In 1863-1867, some of the locomotives were completely rebuilt. The locomotives that did not undergo rebuilding were designated series B. During the reconstruction, covered booths were installed for the locomotive crew, which was absolutely necessary in the harsh climatic conditions of Russia. Some locomotives received a conventional rocker-type steam distribution mechanism.
