<space=1em>Replacement of Steam Locomotives

<space=1em>In the mid-1950s, a large-scale process of replacing steam locomotives with "progressive types of traction" — diesel and electric — began on the USSR railway transport. For train operation on sections and entire lines of railways that were being converted to diesel traction, a large number of new powerful diesel locomotives were required that could successfully replace steam locomotives.

<space=1em>In the case of freight locomotives, the issue was resolved by launching serial production of TE3 diesel locomotives, and later 2TE10 of various modifications. In the case of passenger diesel locomotives, the issue was more acute. It took a long time to create special passenger locomotives, and in order to quickly saturate the fleet of passenger vehicles in a short time, corresponding modifications of freight locomotives were created. The TE7 passenger locomotive was developed on the basis of the TE3 freight locomotive, which, however, found limited use on the MPS network.

<space=1em>New Series

<space=1em>The TEP10 series of locomotives, created at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s at the Kharkov Transport Engineering Plant, were much more widespread. The TEP10 (originally designated TE11) was a passenger version of the TE10 freight locomotive, built at the same plant several years earlier.

<space=1em>The locomotive was a single-section locomotive, all of whose main equipment was similar to that installed on the TE10: a ten-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine 10D100 with a capacity of 3,000 hp. with counter-moving pistons, traction generator MPT-120/49 (later GP-311), traction motors EDT-340 with support-axial suspension.

<space=1em>The main difference from the TE10 truck was in the design of the traction gearbox: due to the reduction of its gear ratio (63: 20 = 3.15 instead of 69: 14 = 4.93 on the TE10), the design speed of the TEP10 diesel locomotive increased to 140 km/h (for the TE10 — 100 km/h) while simultaneously reducing the traction force in long-term mode to 17,200 kgf (for the TE10 — 27,000 kgf). In addition, the fuel capacity of the passenger diesel locomotive was slightly reduced (to 5 t versus 6.5 t on the TE10), equipment for electropneumatic braking (EPB) was installed, and a number of other design changes were made.

<space=1em>Serial production

<space=1em>The TEP10 series passenger diesel locomotives were produced at the Kharkov plant in 1960–1968. A total of 335 locomotives of this series were built, No. 001–335.

<space=1em>On the roads of the USSR

<space=1em>The very first diesel locomotives of the TEP10 series were delivered mainly to the October Railway to the Leningrad-Passazhirsky-Moskovsky depot, and somewhat later to the Kandalaksha depot. These machines began to service passenger trains along the entire northern route of the railway from Leningrad to Kandalaksha.

<space=1em>After the electrification of the Leningrad - Volkhovstroy section in 1965, some of the TEP10 diesel locomotives were transferred to the Leningrad-Finlyandsky and Leningrad-Sortirovochny-Moskovsky depots to haul passenger trains towards Vyborg and Elisenvaara. In the first half of the 1970s, after the October Railway received a significant number of TEP60 series diesel locomotives, which were more suitable for passenger service and replaced the TEP10, the latter were transferred to other railways.

<space=1em>In addition to the October Railway, TEP10 series diesel locomotives were used on many railways of the USSR MPS network — on the Volga (depots Saratov, Volgograd), South (depots Osnova, Poltava, Grebenka), Gorky (depots Krasnoufimsk, Yudino, Agryz, Murom) and Central Asian (depots Tashkent, Mary).

<space=1em>Museum exhibit

<space=1em>Most of the locomotives of this series were retired and excluded from the inventory in the 1980s. The last TEP10 diesel locomotives in Russia to operate were the Murom depot of the Gorky Railway, where these machines worked with passenger trains until 2006.

<space=1em>The TEP10 163 presented in the museum, manufactured in 1965, was sent to the Volga Railway after construction, and in 1977 it was transferred to the Gorky Railway. The locomotive was sent to the museum from the Agryz depot of this line in 1991.

Before the section was switched to electrification in 1986, it ran from Cherusti station (Moscow Railway) to Druzhino station (Sverdlovsk Railway). The last diesel locomotives were at the Agryz depot and serviced commuter trains on the sections from Yanaul station to Neftekamsk station and from Agryz station to Izhevsk station. <space=1em>This locomotive was delivered to the museum from the Agryz depot of the Gorky Railway in 1991.
