Diesel trains

DR1-032

<space=1em>Challenges of the Time

<space=1em>Suburban and local passenger transportation was carried out before the war and until the end of the 1960s by trains of wooden carriages with steam locomotive traction. In terms of its characteristics, especially acceleration of the train, steam locomotive traction could no longer compete with motor traction. In 1956 a decision was made to cease production of steam locomotives and switch to electric and diesel traction.

<space=1em>History of Production

<space=1em>In September 1963 the first domestic diesel train was built at the Riga Carriage Works, consisting of two lead motor and two intermediate trailer cars. It was designated DR-1, and was initially referred to in print as the "Baltika" train.

<space=1em>At the end of 1963 the plant produced the second diesel train. Based on the results of the tests and the introduction of some changes, serial production of DR1 diesel trains began.

<space=1em>Modernization

<space=1em>A total of eight such four-car trains were built by 1966. Then the plant switched to producing six-car trains, and the shape of the cabin and the layout of the passenger compartments were changed.

<space=1em>The updated DR1s were built until 1970. In total, taking into account the eight trains of the first model, 52 DR1 trains were built, after which the plant switched to serial production of the modernized versions of the DR1P train, and from 1973 — to the DR1A.

<space=1em>Features

<space=1em>The carriage bodies were all-metal, all-bearing. The width of the body was 3,120 mm, so diesel trains could be used across the entire railway network. The length of the head car was 26,012 mm, and the trailer car was 25,585 mm, which is significantly longer than any of the rolling stock available on the railway network. The number of passenger seats in the motor car was 80, and in the trailer car - 128. The acceleration of the train on the platform to a speed of 25 km/h was 0.54 m/s2. The design speed was 120 km/h.

<space=1em>Life in the museum

<space=1em>The diesel train presented in the museum was built in 1969. It was used on the Baltic Railway in the Zasulauks depot, then in the track machine stations of the October Railway. The lead motor car DR1-0323 arrived at the museum from the track machine station No. 29 of the October Railway in 2016. This is the oldest car of the DR1 train preserved in museums.

Хронология: <space=1em>In 1936, a two-car diesel train with electric transmission AP-1 (suburban railcar, first type) was built. This was the initiative of the plant, and in the pre-war period it did not find a response in the management of the Ministry of Railways. <space=1em>Experience was available in the Hungarian Republic at the Ganz plant, which built steam railcars at the beginning of the 20th century, and starting in the late 1920s - with internal combustion engines. Therefore, diesel trains were ordered from this plant and began to arrive on the railways of the USSR in 1961. At first, under the designation DP, and then D and D1, they were built with changes until 1988. <space=1em>Then a decision was made to move production to Riga, to the former Phoenix plant, renamed the Riga Carriage Works (RVZ). In September 1963, the first domestic diesel train was built, consisting of two lead motor cars and two intermediate trailer cars. It was designated DR-1 — diesel train, Riga, type 1. At first, it was referred to in the press as the "Baltika" train. <space=1em>At the end of 1963, the plant produced the second diesel train, which was used by the Central Research Institute of the Ministry of Railways (VNIIZhT) to conduct traction and operational tests on the Baltic Railway during 1964. Based on the test results, some changes were made and serial production of DR1 diesel trains began. <space=1em>A total of 8 such four-car trains (numbered 01 through 08) were built by 1966. <space=1em>Starting with train number 09, the plant switched to producing six-car trains. At the same time, the shape of the cabin and the layout of the passenger compartments were changed. Starting from train number 014, the buffer lights were changed and installed in rectangular boxes. Almost all diesel trains of the DR1 family were subsequently produced in this appearance. <space=1em>The updated DR1s were built up to and including 1970. They were assigned numbers from 09 to 029 and from 031 to 053. In total, 52 DR1 trains were built, taking into account the eight first-model trains. After that, the plant switched to serial production of modernized versions of the DR1P train, and since 1973, to the DR1A. <space=1em>The diesel train presented in the museum was built in 1969. It was operated on the Baltic Railway at the Zasulauks depot, then in the track machine stations of the October Railway. The oldest of all the DR1 train cars that are stored in museums.
