<space=1em><b>The emergence of summer residents</b>

<space=1em>At the beginning of the 20th century, summer cottages became very popular in Russia. <nobr>A.P. Chekhov</nobr> wrote: "Until now, there were only gentlemen and peasants in the village, but now there are summer residents. All cities, even the smallest ones, are now surrounded by summer cottages. And one can say that in about twenty years, the number of summer residents will increase to an extraordinary extent."

<space=1em>The spread of summer cottages led to the emergence of a new type of passenger <nobr>transportation —</nobr> suburban traffic. There was a need for new carriages, only with seats, but providing a level of comfort no lower than <nobr>class III</nobr>. "Technical description of a <nobr>2-axle</nobr> class III carriage (for <nobr>69 seats</nobr>) for suburban traffic, <nobr>14 meters long</nobr>" was approved by the Head of the Railway Administration of the Ministry of Railways according to the "Journal of the Technical Conference" dated <nobr>September 24</nobr> <nobr>1912</nobr>

<space=1em>Such carriages were produced by the Russo-Baltic, Phoenix (both in Riga) and Petrograd carriage factories in <nobr>1914–1918.</nobr> In the mid-1920s, they became a model for the development of Soviet two-axle passenger carriages, which received a more advanced Nolthein suspension. These carriages were produced for both suburban and long-distance travel.

<space=1em><b>Museum specimen</b>

<space=1em>The presented carriage was built no earlier than <nobr>1915</nobr>, during the First World War, when it was allowed to replace oak with pine in the manufacture of the body frame. In <nobr>1951</nobr> it was assigned to the Leningrad-Finland carriage section of the October Railway, had <nobr>number 2998</nobr>, by <nobr>1973</nobr> it was excluded from the number of carriages of the passenger fleet.

<space=1em>The carriage was delivered to the museum from the track machine station <nobr>No. 29</nobr> (Toksovo) of the October Railway in <nobr>1996.</nobr> It was restored by <nobr>OOO ARS-M</nobr> in two stages: in <nobr>2012–2013</nobr> the body was repaired, and in <nobr>2016</nobr> the interior was reconstructed.

Хронология:  <space=1em>Two-axle passenger carriages were built from the very beginning of the railway era. The first carriages were somewhat reminiscent of carriages put on a railway track. Gradually, the design of the carriages was improved. Wooden frames were replaced by iron, and then steel. The bodies remained wooden, only they received an outer covering of sheet iron. The roofs were not covered with canvas soaked in resin for long, but due to its fire hazard, since about 1875 they began to cover with roofing iron. <space=1em>Cars on two axles were built in all classes, including director's, saloon and service. <space=1em>Suburban carriages were most often III or IV class. The need for suburban carriages arose in the early 1900s, when dacha life came into fashion, and dachas near Moscow and St. Petersburg began to sprout up faster than mushrooms. <space=1em>The presented class III carriage was built between 1914 and 1918. It was built either by the Russo-Baltic Plant in Riga before 1915 and after its evacuation to Tver since 1916, or by the Partnership of the St. Petersburg Carriage Works. <space=1em>This carriage became the basis for the creation of projects of 14-meter-long carriages for suburban and long-distance travel in the design bureau of the Krasny Putilovets Plant in 1926. The visible difference between these carriages is that the new ones had a reinforced frame and a truss was not installed. Carriages of this type were built by the Kolomensky Plant, the Krasny Putilovets Plant, the Krasny Profintern Plant (Bryansk), the Carriage Works in Mytishchi, the I. E. Yegorov Plant (former Partnership of the Carriage Works in St. Petersburg) from 1926 to 1929. <space=1em>The main source of the collection of passenger cars of the Museum of Russian Railways are track machine stations. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, cars were transferred there for conversion into housing or special cars: material warehouses, cars for transporting track workers to the work site, etc. Almost until the mid-1990s, interesting examples could be found at track machine stations. Since the cars were used as storage facilities and cabins, they, unfortunately, completely lost their interior and interior equipment. <space=1em>Car R.O. 3249 was transferred to the museum from the Toksovo track machine station of the October Railway in 1996.
