Exhibit description

In the mid-19th century, the Russian Empire needed to develop its transport infrastructure. To address this problem, in 1851 Nicholas I issued a decree for the construction of the St. Petersburg–Warsaw Railway.

The 1112 km railway was intended to connect the capital with the western provinces. In addition, the new railway network could provide the country with access to Europe.
