Couch Road

In 1763–1764 at the Kolyvanovo-Voskresensk plants in Altai, the mining engineer K.D. Frolov designed the first sleeper road in Russia. It consisted of wooden scaffolding, sleepers, and carts — "dogs" — moved by a water wheel drive.

P.K. Frolov, the son of a mining engineer, improved his father's design and in 1806–1809 built the first domestic horse-drawn rail road at the Zmeinogorsk mine, 1,867 m long. Carts moved much faster on it. The first rails were wooden, and the muscular power of animals was used as traction. One horse could carry the same load on a horse-rail road that 25 animals could barely move on a dirt road.
