Exhibit description

Rolling stock transfer device Transborder

Horizontal lift

The need for transfer devices arose with the development of railway depots and repair shops.

Transborder — a device for railway depots and factories, operating as a horizontal lift. It allows moving rolling stock from one track to another without using turnouts and turntables.

A transfer device is a mobile platform with rails that moves perpendicular to the main tracks. A car or locomotive drives onto the platform, after which it moves towards the desired track. This allows for the quick and efficient distribution of rolling stock to various repair positions or parking areas.

Transport boards for rail transport have existed for a long time. For example, a drawing of one of the most common transfer boards with an electric drive and a contact network is dated 1911, it was developed for plant № 112 in Nizhny Novgorod.

Transport boards can be linear and circular. Initially, at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the turntables were rotated manually using a lever.

Outdoor exhibition

The outdoor exhibition of the museum presents a working transport board —a specialized device for transferring rail transport vehicles from one track to another. The operating principle of a transborder can be compared to the operating principle of an elevator, but only horizontal.
